Tensions flare at Mumbai housing society over food, Marathi-Gujarati dispute erupts
A heated dispute broke out between members of the Marathi and Gujarati communities at a residential complex in Mumbai over non-vegetarian food consumption, as per reports. The incident took place at the Sambhav Darshan Cooperative Housing Society in Ghatkopar.Ram Ringe, a resident of the society, alleged that his neighbour insulted him by calling him ‘dirty’ for consuming fish and meat. Following the altercation, Ringe approached the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to report the alleged mistreatment.The situation escalated, and the Mumbai Police had to intervene on Thursday to prevent further tensions between the two communities.In response, an MNS leader who visited the housing society on Wednesday night issued a warning to members of the Gujarati community, stating that if they mistreat Marathi residents, there would be consequences.A viral video from the scene shows the MNS leader saying,“He thinks Marathi is dirty? That means Maharashtra is also dirty. So why did you come to a ‘dirty’ place?”The incident has sparked political reactions. Maharashtra minister Ashish Shelar condemned the incident, calling it ‘disrespectful’ and ‘unacceptable’. He stated that discrimination based on language or food habits is not in line with the state’s values of inclusivity and respect.
