The quiet hills of Ramban are seeing a silent revolution, as the Horticulture Department takes center stage in driving economic development in the region. Once known for its basic orchard farming, Ramban is now becoming a vibrant hub of agri-based entrepreneurship, thanks to the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme.

Under this scheme, eligible micro-entrepreneurs can receive financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh, along with technical guidance, training, and business support to modernize their units and connect to wider markets.

"The scheme is a game-changer for local units," says Tehsin Iqbal Chib, Area Marketing Officer Ramban.
"We are not only seeing a rise in fruit production but also helping entrepreneurs tap into markets through value-added products. The PMFME scheme is giving them the tools and confidence to scale up."

Beyond funding, the focus on capacity building and skill development is equipping rural food processors with the necessary technical know-how and management skills to thrive in the competitive market.

From apple and apricot orchards to local fruit jams, pickles, and dried fruit packaging units, Ramban is fast becoming a beacon of rural enterprise and innovation. The collaboration between government departments and local entrepreneurs is laying the groundwork for a self-sustaining and prosperous horticulture ecosystem.

Key Insights:

  • The PMFME scheme is catalyzing rural transformation in Ramban through structured support.

  • Micro-entrepreneurs are benefiting from both financial aid and training, allowing them to move beyond basic cultivation.

  • Ramban’s model can serve as a template for other districts aiming to blend agriculture with modern enterprise.
