Total Active COVID-19 Cases in India: COVID-19 is back, and India is witnessing a fresh surge again! In the latest development, the government has revealed that the number of active cases in the country has risen to 1,047 and around 11 people have died due to complications.
As per the current COVID trends, Kerala remains the worst-affected state, accounting for nearly half of the active caseload. Health officials are on high alert as concerns grow over the emergence of new variants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, which are spreading across parts of Asia and raising fears of another major outbreak.
How deadly are these new COVID variants? Should you be worried? According to the experts, the new variants are showing mild and subtle symptoms. Although the newly detected variants in India and other parts of Asia are not showing severe symptoms, everyone is advised not to panic and simply follow precautionary measures to stay safe.
Talking about the current rising threats of another pandemic wave in India, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that the new variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 are under observation by their special team, and that there are no reasons for concern have been flagged yet.
As cases rise in Kerala and cross the 400 mark, residents are concerned. Spikes were also observed in Delhi, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Punjab reported its first case earlier today and has begun contact tracing.
COVID-19 Rising In India: What COVID Variant Is Circulating Right Now?
The current strain of the COVID-19 virus as reported by INSACOG data, is are protein mutation of the JN.1 virus. According to the initial research, the NB.1.8.1 variant looks more transmissible than previous strains, and is also likely to have better and stronger binding ability to human cells (even for those who are fully vaccinated).
Addressing the media, health officials have stated that about 58 genome sequences of NB.1.8.1 have been submitted to the global COVID-19 database, originating from 22 different countries. The NF.7 variant was observed largely in southern parts of India and both NB.1.8.1 and NF.7 have been reported largely from urban metro cities. However, international cases from the US have also reported high communicability.
What Are the Current COVID Symptoms In 2025?
In a recent interaction with the media, experts have stated that in 2025, the symptoms of COVID-19 in India appear to be relatively mild and less aggressive– compared to previous waves where the Delta and Omicron variants led to severe oxygen drop and pneumonia-like signs. According to recent updates from the World Health Organization (WHO), the newly identified variant NB.1.8.1 is relatively less lethal compared to the previous strains of COVID-19. However, some common symptoms have been identified as sore throat, fatigue, mild cough, fever, muscle aches, nasal congestion, low-grade hyperthermia, headaches, nausea and gastrointestinal issues.
Health experts recommend taking a rapid antigen test or an RT-PCR test if these symptoms persist for more than 3 to 4 days. As a preventive measure, people are also advised to avoid crowded public places. Although seven deaths have been reported so far across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Kerala, medical professionals indicate that most fatalities involved individuals with serious underlying health conditions.
