MGNREGA scam: MLA Bachu Khabad’s son arrested hours after out on bail
In the recent update on the MGNREGA scam, Minister Bachu Khabad’s younger son, Kiran Khabad, was arrested again right after being released from jail. It has come to light that in Lavariya village of Devgadh Baria taluka, Kiran Khabad allegedly committed fraud by passing bills for 21 out of 79 MGNREGA projects that existed only on paper.In the alleged ₹71 crore MGNREGA scam in Dahod district, a case was registered at the ‘B’ Division police station. Both sons of state minister Bachubhai Khabad, Balvant and Kiran Khabad were arrested and sent into police custody for further investigation.The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Dahod granted conditional bail to both sons on a bond of ₹50,000 each on Wednesday. Following the bail, Police had approached the court seeking a stay on the bail order. However, after Thursday’s hearing, the court dismissed the police plea and upheld the bail, resulting in both being released.By evening, the police arrested Kiran Khabad again. re-arrest followed allegations that in Lavariya village, 21 out of 79 MGNREGA works were fraudulently shown as completed on paper, leading to an alleged misappropriation of approximately ₹18.41 lakh.Despite the irregularities being known, no formal complaint was filed at first. However, the police have now begun an active investigation into the new developments of the scam.The then District Development Officer had authorised the Taluka Development Officer, Darshan Patel, to lodge a complaint in connection with the Lavariya village scam. However, Patel failed to do so and has now been arrested in relation to the larger ₹71 crore MGNREGA scam. He is currently serving time in jail.Next hearing on the case is scheduled on Monday.
