Gujarat DGP issues new guidance for school trips, presence of two police officers mandatory
In a move to enhance student safety, Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay has issued a directive to the Education Department, mandating the presence of two police personnel during all school trips across the state. In an official letter addressed to the Principal Secretary of the Education Department, DGP Sahay instructed that all government, semi-government, and private schools must ensure at least two uniformed police officers accompany students on any school-organised trip, tour, picnic, or educational visit. The directive further emphasises that if female students are part of the group, schools must also ensure the presence of female police personnel.School principals have been asked to coordinate with their local police stations well in advance to facilitate the deployment of the officers. This comes after the Harni boat tragedy where on January 18, 2024, 15 students and 2 teachers lost their lives after a boat capsized at Vadodara’s Harni Lake.A total of 23 school students, who were 8-11 years old, went boating along with teachers on the evening of January 18. Notably, only 50% of them had life jackets.Turning a blind eye to safety, the boat operator was accused of seating 20 to 25 people in a boat which had the capacity 10 to 12 people.
