Mumbai local trains to get ‘Kavach’ anti-collision system by 2026
Local trains in Mumbai are set to get equipped with the indigenous anti-collision system ‘Kavach’ by 2026.The system will monitor train movement, compare it against permissible speed limits, and signal indications. Most importantly, it automatically intervenes to apply brakes, if needed.According to reports, Western Railway has laid out plans to implement Kavach on over 2,358 route km, with its commissioning on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route expected by the end of the current fiscal. What is Kavach?Kavach is an indigenously developed train safety system aimed at preventing accidents by monitoring and controlling train speeds. Designed at Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL 4), the highest standard of safety, the development of Kavach began in 2015, followed by over three years of extensive testing. The system was first implemented on the South Central Railway (SCR), receiving its initial operational certification in 2018. Drawing from operational experience in SCR, an upgraded version, Kavach 4.0, was developed and approved in May 2025 for trains operating at speeds of up to 160 kmph. Notably, all components of Kavach are being manufactured within India, further supporting the country's push for technological self-reliance in railway safety. It helps loco pilots in maintaining train speed by effective brake application. Even in low visibility conditions like fog, the loco pilots will not have to look outside from the cabin for a signal. Pilots can see the information on the dashboard installed inside the cab.
