Gujarat Police deploys ‘Abhirakshak’ accident response vehicle to rescue victims during golden hour

In a boost to emergency response infrastructure, the Gujarat Police has launched ‘Abhirakshak’, a specially designed accident response and rescue vehicle equipped with state-of-the-art technology, as part of a pilot initiative where two vehicles will be deployed in Ahmedabad Rural and Surat Rural districts.

The launch of these advanced vehicles aims to address the critical 'golden hour' in the aftermath of serious road accidents, the crucial time frame during which timely medical intervention can save lives.

Abhirakshak was commissioned after an in-depth analysis of accident data across the state. The vehicles have been strategically deployed in districts with a high incidence of serious road accidents.

Equipped for high-risk rescues

Each Abhirakshak unit is outfitted with over 32 specialised tools and rescue devices tailored for complex accident scenarios. These include:

–Metal, glass, and bolt cutters

–Telescopic ladder

–Heavy-duty winch for lifting crashed vehicles

–Stretcher and oxygen cylinders

–Powerful lighting system and generator for night operations

The vehicle is also equipped with night vision goggles, a public announcement system, traffic control light blinkers, and a dedicated chamber for drone operations. Its fireproof and impact-resistant body design makes it suitable for deployment even in high-risk, sensitive, or crowded areas.

First on the scene

The core function of Abhirakshak is to act as a first responder at accident sites. In cases where victims are trapped inside mangled vehicles or in difficult-to-reach locations, these vehicles enable police teams to perform immediate rescue operations. The goal is to ensure victims receive timely aid and are transported swiftly to nearby hospitals.

“Abhirakshak reflects our commitment to leveraging modern technology to protect citizens’ lives. This is just the beginning. We’re consistently making crucial decisions to expand the scope of technology-backed safety equipment across the state,” said Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

Statewide expansion likely

The initiative is currently being run as a pilot project in two districts. However, based on its performance and utility, the state government plans to expand the deployment of Abhirakshak vehicles to other accident-prone areas across Gujarat shortly.

With this move, Gujarat joins a select group of states proactively investing in mobile emergency response infrastructure, marking a paradigm shift in how law enforcement addresses road safety and accident management.
