Only 13 km railway track in Ahmedabad equipped with ‘Kavach’ system
Gujarat lacks of Kavach system on railway tracksDespite the nationwide push to implement the ‘Kavach’ technology, an indigenously developed train protection system designed to monitor train speeds and prevent accidents, its rollout in Gujarat remains concerningly limited. Under the Western Railways Ahmedabad division, the system has been installed on just a 13.42 km stretch between Ahmedabad and Geratpur. No other sections in the region have been equipped with this safety system so far. This information came to light through a Right to Information (RTI) request. While states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi have implemented the Kavach system across thousands of kilometers, Gujarat appears to have treated the Ahmedabad stretch as a mere ‘sample’ run, covering only about 13.42 km.Notably, Indian Railways invests over ₹1 lakh crore annually in safety-related initiatives, as per reports. Yet, over the last five years, only a limited portion of the Ahmedabad division has seen the implementation of this critical technology.Adding to concerns, the Western Railway has refused to disclose official data on the expenses incurred for installing the Kavach system on the Ahmedabad division’s tracks. It is important to highlight that train accidents continue to pose significant threats nationwide. In this context, technologies like ‘Kavach’ can prove to be life-saving. However, the state of Gujarat still awaits the full-scale implementation of such essential safety measures.
