During his tenure, the Indian government revoked the region’s special status of J&K on August 5, 2019. Following this, he was appointed as the 18th Governor of Goa and later served as the 21st Governor of Meghalaya, a position he held until October 2022.It all started when he got his first prominent stint as a politician as a member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly during 1974–77. He represented UP in the Rajya Sabha. Soon, in 1989, he was elected from Aligarh as a member of Charan Singh’s Bharatiya Kranti Dal.Malik also took bold stands during the Pulwama Attack in an interview with Karan Thappar, he claimed that the terror strike happened because the Centre did not provide aircraft to transport CRPF jawans from Jammu to Srinagar despite intelligence inputs about threats.

The former governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Goa, and Meghalaya, Satyapal Malik passed away at the age of 79 on Tuesday, his social media account announced.
