As the ‘Marathi language’ issue heats up, a migrant auto-rickshaw driver in Maharashtra’s Palghar was thrashed in public, allegedly by supporters of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) and his cousin Raj Thackeray’s MNS, for not speaking Marathi.A video went viral on social media on Saturday showing the  auto-rickshaw driver being beaten in Virar, Palghar district. The video showed Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS workers publicly assaulting the driver and forcing him to apologise for allegedly making ‘objectionable’ remarks against the Marathi language and Maharashtra.According to the viral video, the incident occurred on a busy road near Virar railway station. It is reported that the migrant driver from outside Maharashtra allegedly made insulting comments about the Marathi language, the state of Maharashtra, and Marathi icons. Another video of this incident reportedly went viral on social media, which sparked anger among local political groups and citizens.A group, including women, slapped the auto driver and forced him to publicly apologise to a man and his sister with whom he had allegedly misbehaved. Additionally, he was made to apologise publicly for ‘insulting’ Maharashtra and its culture.Confirming the incident, Shiv Sena (UBT) Virar city chief Uday Jadhav said, “If anyone insults the Marathi language, Maharashtra, or the Marathi people, they will get a Shiv Sena-style response. We will not remain silent.” He said the driver had shown the ‘audacity’ to speak against Maharashtra and Marathi people, so he was ‘taught a lesson’ and made to apologise to the public.
