Property dispute erupts into brawl among 4 brothers in presence of father’s corpse

In a disturbing incident that unfolded in the Saraspur area of Ahmedabad, four brothers engaged in a violent brawl over property matters while their father’s body lay in the house awaiting last rites.

The dispute escalated to such an extent that police were forced to intervene, and the funeral was delayed for nearly three hours.

The incident took place at Bombay Housing Society in Saraspur, where 78-year-old Jalubhai had passed away on Sunday.

As preparations for the funeral were underway, tensions flared among his four surviving sons — Ashok, Rajesh, Suresh and Mahesh — over the division of property.

According to locals, the confrontation quickly spiralled into a physical altercation, taking place just metres from the deceased's body.

Jalubhai, a retired labourer, had toiled tirelessly throughout his life to secure a future for his children, amassing multiple properties over the years. However, his death appears to have triggered a bitter feud among his sons, who allegedly began plotting to claim a larger share of the inheritance even before the last rites were performed.

According to police sources, the argument broke out while the body was being prepared for cremation. The verbal spat escalated into a scuffle, and some of the men reportedly attacked each other with household objects, leading to visible injuries. Shockingly, the altercation unfolded in full view of the funeral attendees and neighbours, prompting onlookers to call the police.

A team from Shaherkotda police station, led by the inspector in-charge, arrived at the scene and managed to bring the situation under control. However, due to the prolonged chaos, Jalubhai’s body lay unattended for several hours before the funeral procession could proceed.

Even at the crematorium, the feud did not subside. The brothers once again began quarrelling, causing further delay in performing the final rites. At this point, community elders, incensed by the behaviour, declared that they would conduct the cremation themselves if the brothers failed to stop fighting.

Police eventually detained two of the brothers to ensure the rites were completed without further disruption. Officers noted that bloodstains were found on one of their vehicles as a result of the altercation, and a case has been registered in connection with the violence.

The incident caused major commotion in the neighbourhood, with crowds gathering and traffic movement disrupted in the area. Authorities have urged the family to resolve their disputes legally and respectfully.

What was meant to be a solemn farewell turned into a public spectacle, highlighting how bitter property disputes can tear families apart, even in moments of mourning.
