Indian-origin convicted for rape in SingaporeAn Indian national shop owner was convicted of rape and was sentenced to 14 years, three months and two weeks in jail by the Singapore High Court on Thursday.Ramalingam Selvasekaran, a 58-year-old, was found guilty of all three charges against him on July 7 – one count of rape and two counts of outrage of modesty – after a trial in which he represented himself, as per a Singaporean daily.As per reports, in 2021, Selvasekaran offered the victim a free drink and later, when she returned to buy an ice-cream, he touched her inappropriately and made her perform oral sex on him at his store in Jurong West 2021.Following the assault, the girl reportedly sought help from a passerby, who called the police.At the end of the trial, Ramalingam argued that the girl's testimony should not be believed as there was an absence of police camera footage of her returning to her home after the incident.He also added that he was suffering from 'erectile dysfunction' and no DNA of his was found on her body.However, the judge convicted him, establishing it ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ and found ‘no significant weaknesses in the victim's recounting of events’.Also read:Indian-origin pilot arrested at San Francisco airport in child abuse case
