Garbage truck in Surat runs over 13-year-old, Mayor orders probe

An incident occurred in Surat’s Udhna area on the night of Wednesday, May 29, when a speeding garbage truck of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) ran over a 13-year-old boy, resulting in his death. Upon receiving information, Udhna police and an ambulance rushed to the scene. The boy’s body was sent for postmortem, and police have registered an accident case and initiated further investigation.According to reports, the SMC garbage truck hit and killed a 13-year-old boy in Udhna. The victim, Kartik Nehate, originally from Maharashtra and currently residing in Surat with his family, had gone out with his sisters on two wheeler to buy soda near their home. The garbage truck allegedly approached at high speed, took a sudden turn, and collided directly with their two wheeler. The impact caused Kartik and his sisters to fall from the vehicle. Kartik died on the spot, while his sisters sustained serious injuries.Police have registered a case against the truck driver for negligent driving and are conducting a detailed investigation.Grief and anguish engulfed the family, who have demanded strict punishment for the driver and called on authorities to improve road safety measures. According to the family, Kartik’s sister was riding the two wheeler at a moderate speed when the garbage truck suddenly veered in without any indicator, causing the fatal accident.Following the incident, Surat Mayor Daxesh Mavani ordered an inquiry against the driver. He also stated that there would be a review to ensure that all government vehicles are operated only by licensed and qualified drivers.
