117 railway stations in Mumbai to get ‘panic buttons’: Here’s all you need to know
Days after four died after falling off a local train due to overcrowding, Central Railway will install panic buttons at 117 stations along the main and harbour lines in Mumbai to allow commuters to quickly alert authorities during emergencies such as accidents, overcrowding, or criminal activities.According to reports, panic buttons will be strategically installed at station masters’ offices, ticket counters, and other critical locations. When pressed, these buttons will instantly alert the control room and railway personnel, while also prompting CCTV cameras to focus on the incident area. This will enable a rapid response from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP).As part of additional safety measures, an extra row of handles will be fitted in train coaches near the footboards to provide passengers with a more secure grip, helping to prevent falls during transit.The move comes after four passengers died and nine injured after falling from a moving Mumbai local train between Mumbra and Diva stations in Thane district on June 9.The incident reportedly occurred on a train heading towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
