Cambodia arrests 3,000 involved in ‘digital arrest’ scam after India's intimation

Cambodia digital arrest scam racket bustedA massive crackdown has been carried out in Cambodia against those involved in online scams and the “digital arrest” racket. Acting on a request from India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C), the Cambodian government conducted nationwide raids over the past 15 days. A total of 3,075 people have been arrested, including 105 Indian nationals.According to reports, India’s Home ministry and MEA had received intelligence indicating that the digital arrest scam was being operated from Cambodia. Following this, the Cambodian government conducted raids at 138 different locations. Among those arrested, 606 are women. The arrested individuals include–1,028 Chinese nationals693 Vietnamese366 Indonesians105 Indians101 Bangladeshis82 Thais57 Koreans81 Pakistanis13 Nepalis4 MalaysiansAdditionally, people from countries such as the Philippines, Nigeria, Myanmar, Russia, and Uganda have also been arrested.During the operation, authorities seized a large number of computers, laptops, mobile phones, drugs, weapons, bullets, fake Chinese and Indian police uniforms, and drug-processing machines. In many cases, drugs such as ecstasy powder were also found. Authorities believe that more arrests could follow, as the racket may have links to individuals in other countries as well. The investigation is ongoing.Efforts underway to repatriate arrested IndiansThe Indian government is now working to repatriate the 105 Indian nationals arrested in Cambodia. Last month, officials from MEA held a meeting with Cambodian authorities. The Indian government has also issued a warning to its citizens to stay alert and avoid getting involved with cyber fraud networks operating in Cambodia.
