Wrongly accused: One police error cost UP man 17 years of his life

Representative Image: AI generatedIn a shocking case of mistaken identity and police negligence, a man from Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district lost 17 years of his life fighting to prove his innocence, as per reports. According to reports, Rajveer Singh Yadav, a resident of Nagla Bhant village, was wrongfully implicated under the Gangster Act in 2008 due to an error by local police officials. The incident dates back to December 1, 2008, when the then inspector Om Prakash of the city police station registered an FIR against four individuals, Manoj Yadav, Pravesh Yadav, Bhola, and Rajveer. The investigation was handed over to Dannahar police station, and the then SI Shiv Sagar Dixit arrested Rajveer Singh Yadav under the Gangster Act, claiming he had a criminal background with three prior cases registered against him. However, it was later revealed that the criminal records cited were not of Rajveer, but of his brother, Ramveer Singh Yadav. Reportedly, due to a clerical mistake, the name ‘Rajveer’ was wrongly entered in the FIR instead of ‘Ramveer’. Despite the error, the police continued with the investigation and filed a chargesheet naming Rajveer, who was then sent to jail for 22 days. After his release, Rajveer reportedly spent the next 17 years battling in court to clear his name. He eventually approached the Gangster Court, where a re-investigation revealed that the crimes were indeed committed by his brother Ramveer, and that Rajveer had been falsely implicated. As per court proceedings, former Inspector Om Prakash also admitted to the error, stating that Ramveer’s name should have been recorded in the FIR, but due to oversight, Rajveer was listed instead. The mistake was never corrected in the chargesheet, leading to prolonged legal suffering for an innocent man. After 17 years, the court finally acquitted Rajveer and strongly rebuked the police department for its grave negligence. The case has sparked serious questions over accountability within law enforcement and the devastating impact a single administrative error can have on an individual’s life.
