BJP, Congress to apply compromise policy to share power in Amul Dairy polls, claim sources

Political manoeuvring has begun to secure victory in the upcoming Amul Dairy election in Anand. Just like in 2020, both BJP and Congress are reportedly going for a ‘compromise’ formula to share power, sources have claimed. Before the election is announced, the voter list will be released on August 12. Once that is done, the election could be declared any time. According to sources, a prominent industrialist in Surat — a close associate of Gujarat BJP president C R Patil — has acted as a mediator in these elections. This mediator arranged a secret meeting between leaders of both the BJP and Congress, where a strategy was discussed: BJP would get seven seats, the Congress would get five, and the chairman’s post would go to the BJP while the vice-chairman’s post would go to the Congress.Political observers in the cooperative sector note that in the 2020 elections, the BJP secured seven seats and the Congress five. BJP retained the chairman’s position, while the vice-chairman’s position went to Congress leader Rajendrasingh Parmar. In the previous term, the BJP had also appointed three directors as government representatives, but the Gujarat High Court later quashed these appointments. This time, the BJP seems keen to avoid such a scenario, as a head-to-head contest could result in losing control of Amul. The role of Ramsingh Parmar — a veteran cooperative leader from Kheda district who served as Amul’s chairman for 16 years — is expected to be decisive in this election. In 2020, ten of Parmar’s candidates had won. However, he is now a BJP MLA and was removed from Amul, causing internal discontent. Sources say his supporters are quietly working to defeat BJP panel candidates in Kheda and Mahisagar districts, and the BJP is aware of these plans. A direct contest in the Amul elections could have serious political repercussions for the BJP, which is why the compromise formula is being pushed.Out of the 12 blocks in the Amul Dairy elections, it is likely that the BJP will field weaker candidates in five blocks — one in Borsad, two in Kheda, and two in Mahisagar — making it easier for Congress to win. There is also a director’s seat held by an individual member (with only 25 votes), which has been uncontested for years and traditionally won by Ravajit Patel. In 2020, after the BJP took control of Amul Dairy, it appointed three government representatives. Using its majority, it removed Congress’s former MLA Rajendrasingh Parmar from the vice-chairman’s post and also ousted Ramsingh Parmar from the chairman’s post. Later, Kanti Sotha, former Congress MLA from Anand, joined the BJP and was appointed vice-chairman of the dairy.
