Congress leader’s son booked for sexual assualt, forced abortion in Vadodara
A rape case has been registered against Anirudhsinh Gohil (26), son of Congress leader and former MLA Rajendrasinh Gohil, for allegedly sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman over a period of time and forcing her to undergo an abortion.The woman filed a complaint at Nandesari police station on May 15, alleging repeated sexual assault by Gohil at her residence and in hotels. According to the FIR, the accused promised to marry her after she became pregnant, but later coerced her into terminating the pregnancy.She has alleged that she was raped multiple times over nearly two years. She has also recorded her statement before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC, in which she stated that Gohil assaulted her physically — at least once in the presence of his father.Police said the woman was taken to Raj Nursing Home in Anand on April 14, where she was admitted around 10 pm with complaints of nausea, vomiting, headache, and abnormal uterine bleeding. She suffered a miscarriage the following morning. Hospital staff informed investigators that the woman appeared to have taken abortion-inducing pills prior to admission. Dr Ragini Patel, under whose name the clinic operates, was reportedly abroad at the time.Based on the woman’s statement, Nandesari Police Inspector Swapnil Pandya registered a case under IPC sections pertaining to rape, assault, and cheating, along with relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The case has since been transferred to ACP C. B. Solanki of the SC/ST Cell for further investigation.Gohil is currently absconding. The police have filed an affidavit opposing his anticipatory bail application.Political affiliations The accused belongs to a politically active family. His father, Rajendrasinh Gohil, is the current Vice President of the Vadodara Taluka Panchayat and a member of the Congress party. He was previously suspended from the BJP before switching affiliations.Anirudhsinh’s grandfather, Mangalsinh Gohil, was formerly a Janata Dal MLA and later joined the BJP. His uncle, Govindsinh Parmar, is the sitting BJP MLA from Umreth.
