30 dead, 80,000 evacuated after torrential rains in China’s Beijing
Flood like situation in ChinaTorrential rains have wreaked havoc in Beijing, the capital of China. So far, 30 people have been reported dead due to the flooding, and nearly 80,000 residents have been forced to evacuate to safer locations. Water has inundated low-lying areas of the city, severely disrupting daily life. Local authorities are conducting rescue and relief operations on a war footing. Several roads have been damaged, and power has been cut off in 136 villages.Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed officials to make every possible effort to locate the missing, carry out rescue operations, properly rehabilitate the displaced, and take all necessary steps to minimise loss of life.According to reports, 28 deaths have been reported in Beijing’s Miyun district and 2 in Yanqing. The city experienced heavy rainfall throughout the night. As per Monday’s reports, 4 people have died due to floods and rain-related incidents, while 8 others remain missing after being trapped in a landslide in Hebei province. This brings the total death toll from the storm to at least 34.Due to the heavy rains and flooding, more than 40,000 people in low-lying areas of Beijing and Tianjin have been relocated to safer areas. In Beijing’s rural Miyun district, a dam overflowed, releasing water at levels not seen since its construction in 1959. Authorities have warned residents to stay away from riverbanks as water levels continue to rise, with more heavy rainfall expected.Beijing officials initiated a high-level emergency response on Monday at 8 pm. Until the situation stabilises, people have been instructed to stay indoors, schools have been closed, construction work has been suspended, and all tourism and outdoor activities have been halted.
