Bavla police rescue woman in emotional distress from drowning in flooded underbridge
The Bavla police on Tuesday averted a potential tragedy after rescuing a woman in emotional distress who attempted to take her own life by jumping into a flooded railway underbridge on the Bavla-Dholka Road in Ahmedabad.According to officials, continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days had led to waterlogging in several areas under Bavla police station limits, including the railway underbridge near Ratnadeep Society and Swagat Residency. The underbridge was filled with approximately 15 feet of water.Around 2 pm, while on patrol in the area, Police Sub-Inspector S V Chowdhary and his team noticed the woman jump into the water. Acting swiftly, Assistant Head Constable Hasmukhbhai Hemubhai, armed Police Constable Rajeshbhai Kantibhai, GRD jawan Manojbhai Somabhai Vaghela, along with local residents, intervened and managed to pull her out of the water in time.The woman was then brought safely to Bavla police station where a female officer attended to her, and the 181 Abhayam women’s helpline team from Dholka was called in for counselling and support.During the counselling session, it emerged that the woman had divorced some time ago and was living with her brother-in-law. She had reportedly left home without informing her family and was believed to be undergoing significant emotional turmoil.The police contacted her family and, after verifying her identity, handed her over to them safely — successfully saving her life and ensuring she received immediate emotional support.Police officials praised the efforts of the team for their alertness and compassion, adding that continued patrols and community vigilance will remain in place across waterlogged and sensitive zones.
