Ahmedabad Crime Branch busts chain-snatching gang, two arrested, stolen gold worth ₹9.35 lakh recovered
The Ahmedabad City Crime Branch has arrested two individuals involved in a series of chain-snatching cases reported across the city. With the arrests, police claim to have solved at least seven incidents of gold chain theft reported in Satellite, Navrangpura, Anandnagar, Ghatlodia, Ellisbridge, and Paldi.Acting on a tip-off from an informant, the Crime Branch teams launched a coordinated operation and apprehended the two accused Ravi Rameshbhai Datania (23) and Nikul Gautambhai Datania (21), both residents of Shahpur in the city. The police recovered gold chains of various designs valued at ₹9.35 lakh, along with a white-coloured Suzuki Access scooter used in the crimes, worth ₹50,000, taking the total seizure to ₹9.85 lakh.According to Crime Branch ACP Bharat Patel, the accused confessed to targeting unsuspecting men and women walking alone during evening hours, particularly between 8 and 10 pm. They would ride around on two-wheelers, identify potential victims, and swiftly snatch gold chains from their necks before speeding off in the opposite direction to avoid identification.Modus operandiThe accused would commit the offences while moving across different city areas, often changing vehicles and routes to evade capture. After committing the thefts, they intended to melt the stolen ornaments and convert them into a single necklace for easy resale, reducing the chances of being traced through identifiable jewellery.Preliminary interrogation revealed that Ravi took to snatching due to financial distress, while Nikul allegedly committed the crimes to buy an expensive gift for his wife following their recent marriage.Pending arrestsTwo other accomplices identified as Pradeep Mangabhai Chauhan and one Badal, both also residents of Shahpur are currently absconding. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest them.Registered casesThe duo has been booked in connection with seven FIRs registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, across Satellite, Anandnagar, Navrangpura, Ellisbridge, Paldi, and Ghatlodia police stations.The police are continuing their investigation to trace the channels through which the stolen jewellery was being disposed of and are not ruling out the involvement of a wider network.
