Bopal stockbroker’s death: Victim’s family under police scanner, weapon still missing

The mysterious death of a 41-year-old stockbroker in Ahmedabad’s Bopal area has taken a fresh turn with police detaining five to six individuals for questioning and intensifying their probe into all possible angles — including financial disputes, external involvement, and potential abetment by family members. The deceased, Kalpesh Tudiya, a resident of Kabir Enclave in Bopal, was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head late Tuesday night, moments after two men had come to visit him at his home. His 14-year-old daughter was reportedly downstairs when the shot was fired. Upon hearing the sound, they rushed to the upper floor and found Kalpesh lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead. The case, initially believed to be a possible homicide, shifted direction after police found a suicide note in Kalpesh’s pocket, in which he allegedly wrote that he had lent ₹25 lakh to a man who was refusing to return the money, driving him to take the extreme step. However, investigators remain sceptical.“It’s a complicated case. We have found a suicide note, but the weapon used in the shooting is still missing from the scene. That raises several questions,” said Om Prakash Jat, District Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad Rural. Two men may have brought the weapon, say policeAs per the investigation so far, Kalpesh had allegedly been attempting to procure a firearm over the past few days and had contacted multiple friends in this regard. Police suspect that the two men who visited his house might have come to deliver the weapon and that they may have taken it with them after the shooting — either to avoid getting implicated or as part of a larger plan.As of Wednesday evening, police had detained around five to six individuals connected to the case, including the person mentioned in the note. During preliminary interrogation, the detained man admitted to monetary transactions with Kalpesh, but denied any pressure from him to repay the money.“We are not ruling out any angle. It could be a suicide, but we are also probing whether Kalpesh was provoked or forced to take the step,” said Jat.Police not ruling out family’s roleA major focus of the investigation is the conduct of Kalpesh’s daughter, who was present in the house at the time of the incident and was on a video call with her mother. Police sources said that their behaviour raised eyebrows, as neither appeared visibly distressed after the incident.“The wife and daughter’s reactions were unusual. The girl, despite being just 14, was answering our questions with striking confidence. Neither of them cried. This has led us to keep the possibility of family involvement open,” said a senior officer close to the probe.Officials are now examining whether the shooting was staged or abetted, and whether the suicide note was genuinely written by Kalpesh. A forensic handwriting analysis has been ordered to verify its authenticity.“Until we recover the weapon, we cannot confirm whether this was a suicide or a cleverly planned murder made to look like one,” said Jat.CCTV footage from the area is being analysed to trace the movement of the two visitors, while forensic experts are collecting evidence from the crime scene.Kalpesh’s body has been sent for post-mortem. Police have appealed to the public to refrain from speculation, adding that all angles, financial, personal, and criminal, remain under active investigation.

However, investigators remain sceptical.

“It’s a complicated case. We have found a suicide note, but the weapon used in the shooting is still missing from the scene. That raises several questions,” said Om Prakash Jat, District Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad Rural.

Two men may have brought the weapon, say police

As per the investigation so far, Kalpesh had allegedly been attempting to procure a firearm over the past few days and had contacted multiple friends in this regard. Police suspect that the two men who visited his house might have come to deliver the weapon and that they may have taken it with them after the shooting — either to avoid getting implicated or as part of a larger plan.

As of Wednesday evening, police had detained around five to six individuals connected to the case, including the person mentioned in the note. During preliminary interrogation, the detained man admitted to monetary transactions with Kalpesh, but denied any pressure from him to repay the money.

“We are not ruling out any angle. It could be a suicide, but we are also probing whether Kalpesh was provoked or forced to take the step,” said Jat.

Police not ruling out family’s role

A major focus of the investigation is the conduct of Kalpesh’s daughter, who was present in the house at the time of the incident and was on a video call with her mother. Police sources said that their behaviour raised eyebrows, as neither appeared visibly distressed after the incident.

“The wife and daughter’s reactions were unusual. The girl, despite being just 14, was answering our questions with striking confidence. Neither of them cried. This has led us to keep the possibility of family involvement open,” said a senior officer close to the probe.

Officials are now examining whether the shooting was staged or abetted, and whether the suicide note was genuinely written by Kalpesh. A forensic handwriting analysis has been ordered to verify its authenticity.

“Until we recover the weapon, we cannot confirm whether this was a suicide or a cleverly planned murder made to look like one,” said Jat.

CCTV footage from the area is being analysed to trace the movement of the two visitors, while forensic experts are collecting evidence from the crime scene.

Kalpesh’s body has been sent for post-mortem. Police have appealed to the public to refrain from speculation, adding that all angles, financial, personal, and criminal, remain under active investigation.
