Bhagavad Gita chapters added to first language for Class 9-12, including in Urdu GSHSEB books

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has incorporated chapters of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita into first language textbooks, including Gujarati, Hindi, English, and Urdu, for Classes 9 to 12.The Gujarat government had earlier passed a resolution to teach Bhagavad Gita to students across schools, from primary to higher secondary levels. Following this, students began learning Gita chapters with Sanskrit shlokas. Last year, the Gujarati first language textbook for Classes 9 to 12 was updated with two additional chapters, and this new version has already been in use. However, other language textbooks were not ready at the time, so examination questions from the Gita were not included for those languages.With new textbooks out, the board has implemented revised exam paper formats for all four languages starting this year.The Gujarat board has sent a circular to all District Education Officers (DEOs) instructing schools to implement the new textbooks and formats starting from the academic year 2025–26. According to the board, the changes in exam paper formats were suggested by subject experts and approved in the board’s academic committee meeting held on July 17. Monthly planning for the syllabus and implementation of the new formats has also begun.
