Ellisbridge’s Orient Club turns battle ground over membership, swords brandished, members assaulted

A violent clash broke out between two groups at the elite Orient Club in Ellisbridge, Ahmedabad on Tuesday, following a dispute over membership termination. The altercation, which reportedly escalated into vandalism and assault involving weapons, has resulted in cross complaints being filed at Ellisbridge police station.As per police sources, the brawl was triggered after the club’s management revoked the membership of Bhupendra Shah and his family. The revocation allegedly led to a verbal confrontation between club member Bhadresh Shah and other committee members. Matters escalated when, as per police, Bhadresh Shah allegedly called in 10 to 15 outsiders, who stormed the club premises.“The men who entered the club were reportedly armed with swords and sticks,” said a senior officer familiar with the case. “There was widespread vandalism. Plates were broken in the restaurant area, furniture was damaged, and valuables, including a chain, wristwatch, and wallet, were allegedly stolen from one of the committee members.”During the incident, committee member Divyang Shah was allegedly beaten severely. “They dragged him from outside into the club and continued to assault him. He was questioned about other committee members,” said Ajit Patel, another senior club member.The secretary of the club was reportedly assaulted on the first floor and dragged downstairs, where he was further attacked. Several injured members had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.Two separate FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident. One has been filed by Bhadresh Shah against club members Divyang Shah, Rajendra Trivedi, and Raju Narang, alleging assault and damage to property. In turn, Divyang Shah has complained about Bhadresh Shah, his son Bhumi Shah, his wife, his daughter, and the group of 10–15 outsiders who were allegedly called in during the incident.Police said both complaints are being investigated, and CCTV footage from the club is being reviewed to ascertain the sequence of events. “We are probing all aspects, including unlawful assembly, criminal intimidation, and theft,” an official from Ellisbridge police said.Club authorities have declined to comment on the incident officially, but have confirmed that an internal inquiry is also underway.
