While there may be multiple claims by the Municipal Corporation of Jammu and the Jammu Smart City Limited about lighting up the dark corners of the city with street lights, most of these electric lights are rendered useless after the recent rains.
There is also a major confusion among the residents about the street lights installed by JMC that are managed by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and those under the Smart City Project. The EESL is responsible for maintenance and repairs of the street lights installed by JMC but residents complain that the complaints are not being resolved even after passing of one week.
On the other hand in most of the posh localities of Jammu, the street lights installed under the Smart City Project are not working but no action has so far been taken against the officials responsible for their operations. Residents say that funds running in crores were spent on street lights in Jammu city but these have been a mere waste.
There are many lanes in posh localities of Trikuta Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Channi Himmat among others that are dark during the evening time. The residents have been complaining of the issue but there seems to be little action on ground.
Residents say that to verify as to how many lights are non-functional across Jammu, they must check with the EESL.
The photo in the report is symbolic.
