Gujarat Police launches mega search of medical stores to prevent illegal sale of narcotics
To prevent abuse and illegal sale of narcotic drugs in the state, a mega checking campaign was conducted by Gujarat Police in medical stores across the state from 12 pm today on the instructions of Minister of State for Home Affairs Harsh Sanghvi and DGP Vikas Sahay.The main objective of this checking campaign is to prevent the sale of drugs covered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act without prescription, quantity of prohibited drugs, excessive storage of drugs against the rules, sale of drugs that cannot be kept by medical stores, and to prevent the sale of narcotic drugs without prescription.In this campaign, extensive checking is being carried out in all cities and districts of the state in coordination with the local police station in-charge, Local Crime Branch (LCB), Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Food and Drug Department officers. This action is being carried out under the supervision of DySP/DCP, in which officers in charge of all police stations are forming separate teams and conducting detailed checks at medical stores.This drive focuses on medical stores located near schools, colleges and educational institutions, where the possibility of misuse of drugs is more.Strict action is to be taken if these drugs are being sold without prescription. This includes Aminopyrine, Phenacetin, Nialamide, Chloramphenicol, Phenylephrine, Furazolidone, Oxyphenbutazone and Metronidazole. These drugs should be sold only with a doctors’ prescription, and their illegal sale poses a serious risk to society.Under the campaign, intensive checking of 282 medical stores was carried out in Valsad district till 4 pm. A total of 45 cases including one case under the NDPS Act have been registered. Apart from this, 333 medical stores were checked in Surat city and 93 codeine syrups were seized from one medical store and 15 codeine syrups and five alprazolam bottles from one medical store and legal action has been taken.In Patan, 61 medical stores were checked, 184 in Navsari, 66 in Jamnagar, 258 in Bharuch district and 23 in Ahwa Dang.In addition, a total of 129 medical stores in Dahod district, 112 in Panchmahal district and 317 in Gandhinagar district were checked as this operation is still ongoing.
