7,000 daily steps may be enough for health benefits, study finds

Walking daily helps reducing stressClocking 7,000 steps a day may provide significant health benefits for adults, making it a more realistic goal than the commonly promoted 10,000-step target, suggests a new study by the Lancet. The study, titled “Daily steps and health outcomes in adults: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis,” analysed data from 57 studies across 35 cohorts. Researchers found that 7,000 daily steps were linked to lower risks of death, heart disease, dementia, diabetes, depression, and falls.Specifically, compared with 2,000 steps per day, taking 7,000 steps daily was associated with:47% lower risk of death from any cause25% lower risk of heart disease47% lower risk of death from heart disease37% lower risk of cancer mortality14% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes38% lower risk of dementia22% lower risk of depressive symptoms28% lower risk of falls. The analysis showed that while 10,000 steps daily is still beneficial for those who are more active, 7,000 steps per day can still lead to meaningful health improvements and may be a more achievable goal for many people.Researchers noted limitations, including fewer studies for some outcomes and a lack of age-specific data, but highlighted that consistent daily movement can play a key role in improving long-term health.

Walking daily helps reducing stress

Clocking 7,000 steps a day may provide significant health benefits for adults, making it a more realistic goal than the commonly promoted 10,000-step target, suggests a new study by the Lancet.

The study, titled “Daily steps and health outcomes in adults: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis,” analysed data from 57 studies across 35 cohorts. Researchers found that 7,000 daily steps were linked to lower risks of death, heart disease, dementia, diabetes, depression, and falls.

Specifically, compared with 2,000 steps per day, taking 7,000 steps daily was associated with:

47% lower risk of death from any cause

25% lower risk of heart disease

47% lower risk of death from heart disease

37% lower risk of cancer mortality

14% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes

38% lower risk of dementia

22% lower risk of depressive symptoms

28% lower risk of falls.

The analysis showed that while 10,000 steps daily is still beneficial for those who are more active, 7,000 steps per day can still lead to meaningful health improvements and may be a more achievable goal for many people.

Researchers noted limitations, including fewer studies for some outcomes and a lack of age-specific data, but highlighted that consistent daily movement can play a key role in improving long-term health.
