Officers avoid transfers, key education posts remain vacant, leaving Gujarat students in limbo
Gujarat’s students are facing uncertainty and possible administrative delays as crucial district education leadership positions remain vacant or temporarily filled due to Class-I officers’ reluctance to transfer from Gandhinagar to districts.Despite the vital role District Education Officers (DEOs) and District Primary Education Officers (DPEOs) play in managing schools and ensuring smooth education delivery, eight key district-level posts continue to operate on a temporary charge basis. This ongoing vacancy, driven by many Class-I officers preferring to stay in Gandhinagar until promotions, is causing avoidable disruptions that ultimately impact students’ learning environments.Currently, these important posts in districts such as Valsad, Ahmedabad, Mahisagar, Bhavnagar, Surendranagar, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot are managed by Class-II officers or held temporarily, raising questions about administrative efficiency and leadership stability.Insiders say that while nine Class-I officers remain stationed comfortably at the state education headquarters, district schools are left without permanent leaders, affecting oversight and decision-making that directly influence students' educational experiences. The delegation of Class-I roles to Class-II officers has sparked repeated controversies. In Rajkot, for example, Kirit Singh Parmar, a Class-II officer serving as Administrative Officer of the Rajkot Municipal Primary Education Committee, was assigned the DEO charge. However, he was soon replaced by DPEO Divit Patel amid disputes, highlighting the fragility of the current system.Education stakeholders demand that Class-I officers be posted permanently to districts without further delay to restore stability and ensure that administrative lapses do not trickle down to Gujarat’s classrooms.
