Home guard jawan held for rape, coercion in alleged ‘Love Jihad’ case in Ahmedabad

The Amraiwadi police have arrested a Home Guard jawan, identified as Shabab Sheikh, for allegedly posing as a Hindu man and luring a young woman into a romantic relationship under false pretences, before sexually exploiting her and pressuring her to convert to Islam. According to police, the accused used the alias 'Satish' to befriend the Hindu woman in 2021 when she was travelling to her computer classes on an Activa scooter. He approached her under the guise of a traffic check, procured her phone number, and initiated regular conversations. Eventually, he convinced her to enter into a friendship contract — a form of informal relationship agreement — that same year. However, upon learning of his true identity and religion, the woman reportedly broke off the relationship. The accused, undeterred, allegedly continued to stalk and harass her. In an attempt to move on, the woman entered into a socially recognised marriage with another man in Surat in 2023. But after Shabab disclosed their past relationship to her husband, the couple divorced within two months. The woman alleged that the harassment resumed, and she was pressured once again into entering a second friendship contract with the accused in 2025. She began living with him in a live-in arrangement, but claimed she was subjected to confinement and mental and physical abuse for nearly 20 days, forcing her to return to her parental home. Despite distancing herself, the accused continued to threaten and harass her, prompting her to lodge a complaint at the Amraiwadi police station. Based on her statement, police have booked Shabab Sheikh under multiple sections, including rape, criminal intimidation, abduction, and provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. ACP Deep Patel of the SC/ST Cell stated, “Preliminary investigations revealed that Sheikh, who served as a Home Guard at Maninagar police station in 2021, also drove for app-based cab services like Ola and Uber. Despite being married with children, he allegedly concealed his identity to pursue the victim and later exerted pressure on her to convert to Islam and adopt the name Afsana.” On July 23, the woman was allegedly forced into Sheikh’s car and subjected to inappropriate physical contact. She had previously submitted complaints on two occasions regarding the harassment, but no formal FIR was filed until now. The investigation has been done by the SC/ST Cell, and further questioning is underway to determine if the incident is part of a larger pattern of coercive interfaith relationships. “The accused misled the victim using a fake Hindu identity, violated her trust, and exerted religious pressure. We have taken serious note of the allegations, and further inquiry is ongoing,” said ACP Deep Patel.
