Former Gondal MLA Jayrajsinh under scrutiny in suspicious death of a youth

The suspicious death of a Rajasthani Jaat youth after being allegedly beaten at the bungalow of former Gondal MLA Jayrajsinh Jadeja has brought the MLA under scrutiny.

Gujarat High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the state government and other concerned parties following a writ petition filed by the victim’s family seeking justice.

Justice Hasmukh Suthar raised serious questions about the police investigation and ordered the authorities to submit a progress report in the next hearing. The high court also directed the state government to ensure the preservation of all CCTV footage referred to by the victim’s family, and explicitly instructed the police officials to secure this evidence without fail.

During the hearing of the petition where the family demanded that the investigation be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) instead of the local police the petitioners alleged that both Jayrajsinh Jadeja and his son were being shielded by the local police.

According to the family, the exact cause of the death has not yet been clearly established. The youth was allegedly assaulted at Jayrajsinh’s bungalow and later died in what police claimed was an accident.

However, the post-mortem report revealed numerous injuries on the body, raising doubts about the narrative and suggesting that this may not have been an accident but a possible murder.

The incident

Ratanlal Shankarlal Jaat, a local vendor in Gayatrinagar, stated that the incident began on March 2 when he and his son Rajkumar were involved in an argument with former MLA Jayrajsinh Jadeja’s son.

The two were walking near the bungalow of the former MLA when they were stopped by his son Ganesh Jadeja along with 7-10 other individuals.

Jaat alleged that they were brutally beaten by Jadeja and his associates. After the attack, Rajkumar and Ratnalal returned home, but Rajkumar feeling that the assault had been unjust, decided to return to the MLA’s bungalow later that night. Rajkumar mysteriously went missing after that.

After which they attempted to file a habeas corpus petition in the high court, the police allegedly suddenly informed them that a dead body had been found at the local civil hospital, which might be their missing son.

Before handing over the body, a post-mortem had already been conducted. However, after the family demanded a second autopsy, the report revealed 42 serious injury marks on the deceased’s body. The family alleged that the police attempted to manipulate and cover up facts throughout the investigation.

In a sudden twist on March 12, a luxury bus driver appeared before the police claiming that the youth had died in an accident caused by his vehicle. However, the family has dismissed this version, stating that several elements of the case remain mysterious, contradictory, and difficult to believe.
