Car set on fire in Chandkheda, garage worker accuses neighbour of arson
In a suspected act of retaliation linked to a pending assault case, a 47-year-old garage worker from Chandkheda has alleged that his neighbour, along with two unidentified accomplices, set fire to a customer’s parked vehicle in his housing society compound early Tuesday morning, causing an estimated loss of ₹1 lakh.According to a complaint filed by Vijaykumar Kishanlal, a resident of Hastinapur Society near Chandkheda railway station, the accused, identified as Vishwadeep Dutta, had been pressuring him and his wife to withdraw a criminal complaint registered against him and his son in December 2023.The FIR, filed at Chandkheda police station, had accused Vishwadeep and his son Muktesh of allegedly assaulting Vijaykumar’s wife, using abusive language, and physically harassing her. A cross-complaint had also been filed by the accused, and both matters are currently pending in Gandhinagar court.In his latest complaint dated August 6, Vijaykumar stated that around 11.30 am on August 5, Vishwadeep had confronted him and his wife near their house and allegedly threatened them, saying "withdraw the case you’ve filed against us or face the consequences", police said.Later that night, around 4 am, the complainant received a phone call from his elder sister, who lives in the same society. She informed him that a red Duster SUV, belonging to one of Vijaykumar's customers and parked inside the society compound near his second residence, had been set ablaze.When Vijaykumar rushed to the scene, he found the rear portion of the vehicle including the bumper, tyres, and paintwork — extensively damaged. He alleged that Vishwadeep, along with two unidentified men, had sprayed an “explosive substance” on the vehicle before setting it on fire.Police said that an FIR has been registered under relevant section of BNS including criminal intimidation, mischief by fire, and damage to property. The matter is under investigation, and efforts are underway to identify the two unknown persons allegedly involved in the act.“A case has been registered and investigation is being taken up. Statements of witnesses mentioned in the complaint and CCTV footage from the area will be examined,” a police official from Chandkheda station said.
