Former Congress MLA Heera Jotva, his son among three arrested in ₹7.30 crore MGNREGA scam in Bharuch
Bharuch police arrested former Congress MLA from Gir Somnath, Heera Jotva, his son Digvijay, and Hansot Taluka Panchayat operator Rajesh Tailor in MGNREGA scam.Digvijay, son of Heera, was arrested by the Junagadh police. He is being brought to Bharuch under a transfer warrant. During the investigation, the police recorded statements of more than 70 people. Both the arrested accused have been taken into six-day police custody, though the police had requested a 14-day remand.A complaint was filed by Pratik Chaudhary, assistant project officer at District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) in Bharuch police station.As per the complaint, the mandated 60-40 ratio (labour to material expenditure) was violated in the procurement of materials. The work was falsely shown to be done as per government SOPs and criteria, and payments were cleared. Fake bills were allegedly created by inflating the quantity of materials used.The complaint names agencies like Jalaram Enterprises, and Murlidhar Enterprise, and some contract-based outsourced employees. These agencies have carried out road repair work with irregularities between January 20, 2023 and June 30, 2024, according to the complaint.After the complaint was filed at the Bharuch ‘A’ Division Police Station regarding a ₹7.30 crore scam under the MGNREGA scheme, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to investigate the matter. Under the MGNREGA scheme in 56 villages across Amod, Jambusar, and Hansot talukas of Bharuch district, two agencies from Veraval in Gir Somnath, Shri Jalaram Enterprise and Murlidhar Enterprise, were given contracts.As the investigation into the scam progressed, copies of the bills, records of payments made to the agencies, and the names of individuals involved were examined. When the involvement of former Congress MLA from Veraval, Gir Somnath, Heera Jotva came to light, and the role of Hansot Taluka Panchayat operator Rajesh Tailor, who was in phone contact with him, was found to be involved, both were arrested last night. After these arrests, the police plan to recover the misappropriated funds during the accused’s remand.
