Toilet ek scam katha: 753 Bharuch villages await toilets with crores spent
The Gujarat government and officials have been making tall claims that 100% of households in 753 villages across 9 talukas of Bharuch district have toilets. But it has been found that even after 30 years of promising toilets, several tribal and newly developed areas are devoid of them. People are still forced to defecate in the open, raising serious allegations of a ₹1500-crore scam under the guise of toilet construction.Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by the state government, a toilet construction drive was initiated in Bharuch district nearly three years ago. The plan aimed to ensure a toilet in every household across all 753 villages of the district. However, in several tribal and remote areas, toilets were never actually built.Many residents ended up building toilets at their own expense. Amid suspicion of large-scale corruption in the construction process, it is alleged that a scam exceeding ₹1500-crore has taken place. The worst-affected are the remote rural areas of Jhagadia taluka, where in 167 villages, toilets were never constructed at all — yet the allocated funds were reportedly siphoned off.In Bharuch district, tribal-dominated areas like Jhagadia, Valia, and Netrang have been falsely shown on official records as having complete toilet coverage. However, ground reality suggests otherwise. It is alleged that contractors and officials colluded to earn massive profits through fake reporting and forged documentation.If an official inquiry is conducted into whether toilets have genuinely been built in these tribal areas, a massive scam may be exposed. In Bharuch’s Nadgam, a newly developed area, for instance, there are no toilets even today.
