5 bridges on Narmada Canal closed, 4 restricted for heavy vehicles following extensive inspection
Days after the tragic collapse of Gambhira Bridge in Vadodara on Mahi River, a report revealed that five bridges on Narmada Canal have been closed as they were found to be dangerous for traffic after a statewide inspection campaign.According to the report of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited, Narmada Canal network spans for 69,000 km in Gujarat covering an irrigation area of 17.92 lakh hectares.About 2,110 bridges are operational on it, connecting the national highways, state highways, and village roads.To assess the current condition of these bridges, prevent possible damages and extend the life of the bridges, a comprehensive visual inspection campaign was conducted by Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam on all these bridges.Based on the findings of this inspection campaign, a total of five bridges found to be dangerous for traffic have been completely closed. Based on the carrying capacity and load capacity of the bridge, four other bridges have been restricted for heavy vehicles.In addition, instructions have been given to the concerned district administration to close 36 bridges for repair work with immediate effect as they are in need of repair. Whereas, instructions have been given to the concerned field offices to ensure the safety of the remaining 2,065 small and big bridges located on the Narmada Canal.Closed bridges–1. Bridge located on the road connecting Ajitgarh and Ghantila villages on Malia Branch Canal in Morbi district.2. Bridge located on Malia Branch Canal between National Highway 151A and Machhu river in Morbi district.3. Bridge located near Dhanki-Chharad village of Lakhtar taluka on Saurashtra Branch Canal in Surendranagar district.4. Bridge located near Lakhtar-Vana village on the Saurashtra Branch Canal in Surendranagar district.5. Bridge located near Bala-Bala Farm in Wadhwan taluka on the Saurashtra Branch Canal in Surendranagar district.Bridges prohibited for heavy vehicles–1. Bridge located on the state highway connecting Phaedra-Bagodara and Bhavnagar on the Vallabhipur Branch Canal in Ahmedabad district.2. Bridge located on the canal on the state highway connecting Naroda in Ahmedabad and Dehgam in Gandhinagar.3. Bridge located on the canal on the road connecting Raipur and Medara in Ahmedabad district.4. Bridge located on the road connecting Phutula and Suigam on the Kutch Branch Canal in Santalur taluka of Patan district.
