Gandhinagar court sentences two men to life in murder case under pilot conviction drive

The accusedIn a significant breakthrough under a pilot project launched by the Gandhinagar Range Police to improve conviction rates in serious crimes, a local court has sentenced two men to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of a man in Sector-10 in Gujarat's capital city in 2022. The verdict marks a major success for the police-led prosecution cell formed under the supervision of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Virendrasinh Yadav.The pilot project, rolled out in Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Sabarkantha and Aravalli districts, assigned 20 serious criminal cases per district for focused prosecution. The Sector-7 police station was entrusted with the 2022 murder case registered under FIR involving multiple IPC, Arms Act, and Gujarat Police Act sections.According to the police, accused Jitendrabhai Patel harboured a personal vendetta linked to an alleged affair with the deceased’s wife. To eliminate her husband Kiranji Viraji Makwana, Patel conspired with co-accused Jaymin Bharatbhai Raval and others.The plot involved procuring an illegal country-made pistol and cartridges from Madhya Pradesh through intermediaries Ashkarbhai Kumbhar and Bharat Purohit. The weapon was ordered by Jayanti Joshi, who received ₹12,000 in cash from Patel for its delivery.On September 26, 2022, the duo used a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle with a fake number plate to chase Kiranji from Indroda village to the vicinity of the Survey of India office in Sector-10. Around 10.30 am, Patel allegedly shot the victim in the chest at point-blank range, resulting in his death.Under the guidance of DIG, the prosecution cell of Sector-7 police station ensured meticulous case-building. The court, weighing documentary evidence, eyewitness accounts, and forensic material, found accused Jayantibhai alias Jayantilal Purohit and Jaymin Raval guilty.On July 8, 2025, the court sentenced both men to life imprisonment under IPC Section 302 (murder), seven years of rigorous imprisonment under IPC Sections 468 and 34, Arms Act Section 25(1)(b)(a), and GP Act Section 135 and a fine of ₹5,000, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in case of default
