Vishwamitri Bachao Committee slams VMC for inaction against Yusuf Pathan’s in land grabbing case
The Vishwamitri Bachao Committee has sharply criticised the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) for its inaction against former cricketer and Trinamool Congress MP Yusuf Pathan, accusing him of encroaching on prime municipal land for over a decade.Despite a complaint being filed six months ago, no official land-grabbing case has been registered against Pathan, who is accused of occupying a 10,500 sq ft VMC-owned plot in Tandalja under TP-22, Final Plot No 90. The land is reportedly valued at ₹84 crore.In contrast, the VMC recently issued a land-grabbing notice to Pashupatinath Mahadev Temple, constructed 25 years ago on government land near Kaladarshan on Waghodia Road in Ward No 3, TP Scheme No 3, Final Plot No 381. The Committee questioned the discrepancy in treatment and demanded equal enforcement of the law.The Committee, which has been actively pursuing the issue, submitted a fresh written representation to the municipal commissioner, urging action. It also cited a previous complaint filed by a former BJP councillor demanding the demolition of what they allege is Pathan’s illegal encroachment. Another councillor has since approached the Vadodara district collector with a formal complaint seeking land-grabbing charges.Pathan filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court on June 18, 2024, challenging a VMC notice asking him to vacate the land. While the case remains pending, the high court has not stayed the municipal corporation from acting against the alleged encroachment. Nonetheless, VMC officials maintain that the matter is sub judice and have so far refrained from taking action.“There has been no recovery of rent or eviction, despite the land being used without authorisation for 12 years,” the Vishwamitri Bachao Committee stated. The group has announced plans to launch a public awareness campaign against the inaction, accusing the civic body of showing undue leniency towards the TMC MP.
