Gujarat Police accused of accepting ₹15 lakh bribe from bootleggerIn a bizarre turn of events, a bootlegger from Rajasthan called up the Gujarat Police complaining about seizure of illicit liquor after he had already ‘paid’ the police.The call has sent shockwaves across the police department, leading senior officials to register a complaint against a DG Squad constable.The incident took place when the Vadodara Rural LCB seized a tanker in Vadodara after receiving a tip-off that a liquor-filled tanker was heading towards Ahmedabad via Vadodara on the Mumbai-Delhi Express Highway from Bharuch.Following this, the LCB team set up surveillance near Sanpa village and apprehended the tanker’s driver, Fagluram Umaram Jat (resident of Barmer, Rajasthan).The tanker was found to have three compartments, one contained gas and oxygen cylinders, while the other two held liquor worth ₹1.77 crore.After the tanker was seized, the LCB’s raiding team reportedly received a call where the caller questioned, “Why have you seized the tanker if the payment was already made to the police?”Following which the LCB informed Vadodara Rural SP Rohan Anand.The police learned that the call was made by Anil Pandit, a Rajasthan-based bootlegger. Pandit had reportedly paid Sajan Ahir, a DG squad constable, ₹15 lakh as bribe to allow the tanker to pass without legal action.Following this revelation, the DGP suspended constable Ahir and ordered a thorough investigation.Enraged that the tanker was seized despite payment, Pandit also reportedly sent an audio clip to senior police officials in Gandhinagar and Vadodara, alleging that ₹15 lakh had been paid to DG Squad constable Ahir to ensure the tanker would not be stopped, and that the money was handed over through an angadia.It is alleged that out of ₹15 lakh, ₹10 lakh was sent to Junagadh and ₹5 lakh was sent to Gandhinagar.It is yet to be determined whether ₹10 lakh was sent to Constable Ahir alone, or others were involved, and who received the remaining amount in Gandhinagar.
