Man plots own death in Surat for ₹2 lakh insurance money, kills friend for body
What earlier thought to be a murder turns out to be insurance killingIn a murder plot inspired by a TV serial, Surat’s Sachin police solved a case of cold-blooded killing that was earlier thought to be an accident on the Saniya-Khambhasala Road on the outskirts of Surat.The man crushed under an unidentified truck was earlier believed to be of Shivkumar alias Maharaj Ramnarayan Mishra, but turned out to be of Deviprasad Pal, whom Mishra knew for the past 10 years.The police learned that Mishra had killed Pal, put his clothes and phone on Pal’s body, and then crushed his skull under truck tyres, so he could not be identified. The plan was to claim the insurance money of ₹2 lakh. Pal was allegedly intoxicated at the time of his death. His body was found on the highway on July 14.Earlier, Sachin police had registered a case of accidental death and started checking the CCTV footage near the site to find the vehicle that caused the accident. The CCTV of the Swaminarayan Temple located on the road did not show any vehicle or pedestrian passing by.On the other hand, the police had received information that the deceased youth had previously lived in the Vadod area and was seen riding a moped with a young man. When the police reached Mishra’s house, his wife Meenadevi Mishra (35) showed no remorse. Instead, she asked about insurance money of ₹2 lakh.As the police got suspicious over the behaviour of the grieving wife, they tracked the SIM cards on Mishra’s mobile to Sarvottam Hotel on Kadodara-Bardoli road, where he was seen driving an unknown man on his moped to the accident site.Another missing SIM from Mishra’s phone was tracked down by the police to one Monu in Pune, where Mishra was found to be alive.The police took Mishra and Monu to Surat for questioning, and Mishra confessed that he was a truck driver and had recently bought another truck. Facing financial difficulties, he was unable to pay instalments of the truck and was under a debt of ₹2 lakh. Knowing that Pal lived alone, he planned to kill him for ₹2 lakh insurance money.The police have arrested Mishra, his wife and friend Monu, who are under remand till July 25.
